What are Skin Tags?

Before we look deeper into skin tags themselves we must first understand from a clinical perspective, exactly what are skin tag. Once we have covered the actual condition we will then look at how to treat the condition.

what are skin tagsFirstly, it is important to stress just how common skin tags are as an ailment for both men and women. Rarely will anyone go through life without experiencing some for of skin tags appearing upon their skin. In the majority of cases experiencing these unsightly pieces of dangling skin is not a sign of any other associated issue.

They are simply a by-product of over exertion and/or friction of the affected area. They are commonly located around the neck and armpit regions of the body. In terms of the size of these tags of loose skin, they will very much vary from patient to patient although the most common size is small, roughly the size of a small apple pip. Areas of the body which are subjected to movement are generally the most affected areas including, between the legs, under the arms, eyelids, neck and under the breasts.

Treating Skin or Body Tags

Since skin tags are so common there are a wide variety of ways to treat them. It is advisable to opt for the removal rather than simply treating the symptoms such as applying soothing creams for example. Once a skin tag has formed it will not simply fade away on its own, you therefore need to look at ways of removing them safely.

Removing a skin tag is not a painful procedure if conducted by a clinical practitioner. Do not attempt to remove the tag yourself and do not subscribe to any of the ‘old wives tales’ of strangulating the tag with cotton for example. This is not an effective method and could lead to infections and other conditions.

Removal Procedure

The process of skin tag removal is very quick and painless and generally only takes between 4-10 minutes. Most medical doctors tend to prescribe to the use of ‘freezing’ to remove the tags which is a really effective and hygienic method of removal. Laser treatment is also a widely used form of removal considering both freezing and laser treatments are painless and quick as well as not leaving any lasting scar tissues. This is particularly pleasing when you have skin tags attached to your eyelids or other sensitive areas of the body.

Once the procedure has been completed there will typically be a small scab or blister that will disappear within a few days.

For those whom have a more significant skin tag problem local anesthetic can be administered and again, a similar procedure is carried out without any pain or discomfort being experienced.

Men in particular are often plagued with skin tags which can be the result of shaving with blunt razors or those partaking in sporting exercises are also vulnerable. Remember, removal needs to be carried out by a medical professional but in all circumstances the treatment is quick, easy and permanent without leaving any traces of the tags.
